Crack-Up

(Nonesuch)

Fleet Foxes’ third album has been awaited so long that its actual arrival comes as a surprise. Crack-Up, its title presumably paying homage to F Scott Fitzgerald’s late-life memoir of alcohol and depression, is a dense listen, with few of the earworm melodies of “Mykonos” or “White Winter Hymnal”.

The lyrics are as elliptical and gnomic as Joanna Newsom at her most arcane: a Goya painting as metaphor for the friendship of the band’s Robin Pecknold and Skyler Skjelset; sea nymphs and Japanese mountains. Sonically, the interplay of harmonies, acoustic guitar and piano is entrancingly beautiful.
