Alfred Barlow, 95, misplaced his keepsakes at a motorway service station near Walsall on his way back from a trip to pay his respects to fallen friends in Normandy, France on 8 June (17).
The Four Weddings & a Funeral star learned about the veteran’s desperate attempts to get his medals back and now he’s offering up a reward out of his own pocket and anonymity to the person who returns them.
Speaking to the BBC on Thursday (22Jun17), Alfred, who lives in the Greater Manchester area of England, admitted losing the medals that meant so much to him and his family had been “very distressing”.
“These medals are worth very little to sell, but to me they are priceless,” he said.
The veteran’s wife and grandson noticed the medals were missing when Barlow returned from a trip to the toilet.
The trio made inquiries in all the shopping and dining outlets at the service station and visited the lost property department, but the medals had disappeared.
Barlow, who took part in the D-Day landings on 6 June, 1944, turns 96 on Sunday (25Jun17) and hopes to be reunited with his medals by then.
“It would make my birthday if I was able to have them back again,” he said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Blind Veterans UK charity.
