Born in 1985, Daniel Shea is a New York-based visual artist whose whimsical but politically charged pictures focus on American life in the age of late capitalism.

Shea recently won the Foam Paul Huf Award for young photographers with his series 43-35 10th Street. Reflecting on the boom and bust of modern real estate, Shea takes us from the rapid development of his native Long Island City to the derelict Searles Valley in California’s Mojave Desert, once known for its thriving mining towns.

Using surreal juxtapositions to highlight the failure of architecture’s utopian ambitions, Shea’s images show how buildings often help to reinforce class boundaries and economic inequality.

‘43-35 10th Street’ is at the Webber Gallery, London, until May 6; an accompanying book is published by Kodoji Press
