Directed by Paul McGuigan, 2017

Lionsgate

The true story of the love affair between fading Hollywood siren Gloria Grahame and Peter Turner, a little-known English actor, pits a rain-sodden Liverpool — where Grahame lived out her last, cancer-ridden days with Turner in the late 1970s — against flashbacks of the pair’s California idyll, all psychedelic sunsets and hippy-dippy hedonism.

Banter and tenderness sustain the liaison, the pair unperturbed by a 28-year age gap that echoes an earlier scandal: Grahame’s husband, the director Nicholas Ray, allegedly found her in bed with his 13-year-old son, whom she later married.

Annette Bening endows Grahame with a pathos redolent of Blanche DuBois, as well as wit and warmth; Jamie Bell as Turner is Scouse charm incarnate.
