Dungarees to Donny Osmond: John Myers’ 1970s photos

Dungarees, stripy sofas, Donny Osmond posters: there’s no mistaking the decade in which these portraits were taken. British photographer John Myers asked residents in his hometown of Stourbridge to pose for the pictures, which initially seem understated but on closer inspection reveal details of the lives and personal space of each subject — whether in their living room or workplace.

Myers used a plate camera, a challenge in itself. “Have you ever tried to photograph someone with two Staffordshire bull terriers using a 5 x 4 plate camera and an exposure of half a second? It should be in the Guinness Book of Records,” he says of one image. The works are about to appear in a book for the first time. “I have lived with the portraits for a long time,” he says. “Rather like family, one would never admit to having favourites.”
