The Last Jedi — ‘a hyperdriven space spectacular’

Directed by Rian Johnson, 2017

Rian Johnson is let loose in grandpa Lucas’s old toybox and he doesn’t hold back. Set-ups lovingly constructed by JJ Abrams in Episode VII are swiftly bulldozed, old certainties in the 40-year saga casually tossed aside.

What Johnson gives us is a hyperdriven space spectacular of real visual flair in which Jedi neophyte Rey (Daisy Ridley) fights to lure a curmudgeonly Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) out of retirement while Finn (John Boyega) pairs up with newcomer Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) to salvage the floundering Rebel cause.

For casual fans it’s a popcorn-ready thrillride with barely a dull moment — only a mid-film excursion to a casino planet feels as pointless and unrewarding as a weekend in Vegas. Star Wars vets will find more to chew on, especially in the characterisation of Luke and the summary conclusion of the Skywalker saga.

Abrams now has to pick up the pieces for what may be the last film in the saga proper. He has his work cut out.
