The Shape of Water — ‘masterful storytelling’

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, 2017

Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture Oscar winner has all the hallmarks of an archetypal romcom. Shy girl meets misfit boy; girl and boy develop a charmingly awkward relationship; girl (a mute cleaner) helps boy (a giant sea-creature) escape from a US military research facility with the assistance of a Soviet double-agent.

It’s practically a Richard Curtis film — Notting Gill, perhaps. Some will likely be put off by the premise, which sounds like it’s been lifted from a bad anthology of fairy tales. They shouldn’t be.

The Shape of Water is no mere genre film but an intelligent, masterfully executed bit of storytelling which features the director’s trademark combination of beautiful, dreamlike cinematography and moments of nightmarish cruelty.

If nothing else see it for Sally Hawkins — words can’t really do justice to her stunning silent performance.
