Sicario 2: Soldado — macho mayhem on the US-Mexican border

Benicio del Toro, left, and Josh Brolin in ‘Sicario 2: Soldado’

The sequel helicopter arrives over the US-Mexican border and we’re caught in the noise and crosswinds. Sicario 2: Soldado has pushed Emily Blunt’s character out during flight: no place for feminine nuancing in this macho mayhem about America shutting the back door to invading Muslim terrorists — or trying — by provoking a Mexican cartels war. Benicio del Toro’s spook-eyed hitman kidnaps a drug lord’s daughter (Isabel Moner). Josh Brolin growls as the CIA. The music growls too: a daring continuo of doomy bass discords. And with so many blood-spraying deaths you should think of wearing a sou’wester.

Taylor Sheridan’s script and Stefano Sollima’s direction are too often by-the-numbers, even so, up to the teaser-trailering coda that intimates Sicario Number 3. I also doubt that any of the X-for-xenophobia conflict scenarios nightmarishly limned in Sicario 2 are worse than the reality on the ground in Uncle Sam Compound today, legislating or loudhailing its no-let-up border paranoias.
