Sound is key to so much horror: the ubiquitous clap of thunder, the caw of the raven, the greatest hits of Boney M. But A Quiet Place may be the first film to make sound the actual trigger of terror by, paradoxically, dialling it right down.

The set-up is classic B-movie: Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (also directing) are the parents of an isolated family assailed by giant insectoids that are drawn to the slightest noise like sharks to blood. With kids among the potential prey, the tiptoe tension is wound tight enough to give audiences temporary OCD — are you sure you removed those batteries? Mind that nail!

And this hushed film keeps introducing more hazardous elements. A newborn baby? Are you kidding me?!

Recalling John Carpenter’s best handiwork, this is an expertly crafted frightener that contains enough jumps to send popcorn scattering. Tell your friends — just do it quietly.
